In October 2024, Village Bicycle Project completed a major distribution of 161 bicycles to students at Koromasalaia Junior & Senior Secondary School in Falaba District. This remote community in Sierra Leone's Northern Province faces some of the most challenging transportation conditions in the country.
Falaba District, bordering Guinea to the north, is characterized by sparse population, limited infrastructure, and vast distances between communities. For students here, accessing education has historically meant hours of walking through difficult terrain.
The distribution at Koromasalaia represents our commitment to reaching the communities that need support most. Despite the logistical challenges of transporting bicycles to such a remote location, the impact on students' lives makes every effort worthwhile.
Teachers at the school report that attendance has historically dropped during the rainy season when roads become difficult to traverse on foot. With bicycles, students can navigate these conditions more easily, maintaining their educational continuity throughout the year.
A particular focus of this distribution was ensuring equal access for female students. In rural Sierra Leone, girls often face additional barriers to education, including safety concerns about long walks and household responsibilities that leave less time for travel. Bicycles help address both challenges, enabling girls to travel safely and efficiently.
Every bicycle we distribute transforms a student's education. Join us in bringing sustainable transportation to communities across West Africa.
